Word of Mouth Works!

The most powerful tool in a business’s advertisement repertoire is word of mouth. When information about a business, large or small, passes from consumer to consumer, the consumer is far more likely to inquire about the business at a later date. After all, who would we trust more, our friend talking to us, or a billboard downtown? Word of mouth is one of the more powerful small business promoting techniques. There are a lot of ways to get consumers to start talking about a business, however, just ‘existing’ often doesn’t cut it. One of the best promotion tools is to offer a discount on products, have a sale, or even offer free products or services for a limited time. It’s also important that consumers have good vibes about the business, after all, no one is going to recommend the business to the friend if it’s no good.

Be sure to target the right consumers for word of mouth advertisement, always play to the target audience for a product or service, and don’t bother going after those who might just have a fleeting interest.

Becoming a Successful Small Business

Within the first year of operation, it’s essential for small businesses to get the word out. The truth is, most small businesses fail because consumers aren’t aware that the business exists. Thus, exposure is the most essential aspect of small business success; at least within the first couple years. Exposure isn’t as complicated as it might seem, though it is important to be smart about small business advertisement. For example, for a small business that sells homemade soap, it would be unwise to try to compete with Oil of Olay and Dove, thus the small business needs to advertise in ways that these industry titans do not. Innovative small business advertisement might include posters at night clubs, signs at gas pumps, or even decals on sidewalks. It doesn’t matter how word gets out about the business, just that word gets out.

Not all public exposure is good so to speak, it’s important that small businesses don’t generate controversy or cast themselves in what could be perceived as a negative light. However, thinking of creative means to reach consumers is always a good business practice.

What’s Your Advertising Technique?

When advertising as a small business, it’s important to have an advertising strategy.  Big businesses all use advertising strategies to varying degrees of success, and finding the advertisement techniques that work best for a small business are even more important.  If a big business advertising campaign fails, that’s just marketing funds lost, but if a small business fails with an advertising campaign, it can have much more dire consequences.  There are numerous different advertising techniques, take Burger King for example, which leapt back from bankruptcy in the last decade to become a competitor.  Burger King TV advertisements follow the model of “all exposure is good exposure”, thus Burger King advertisements often have controversial elements.  While this strategy might not be ideal for a lot of smaller businesses, it has worked for Burger King to generate discussion about their products.

There are other advertising techniques including bandwagoning (everyone has it or is doing it!), celebrity endorsement (if I use this or do this, I can be like them!), and of course sexual implication (sex sells).  Finding the right advertising strategy for a small business will translate to success.

Affordable Small Business Advertising

Let’s face it, as a small business owner it’s impossible to front the money for a major advertising campaign.  However, it’s those major advertising campaigns and public exposure that make big businesses successful.  But as a small business, it’s better to think smart than big.  When advertising a small business, it’s necessary to get creative about finding the target audience and advertising in areas where that audience frequents.  There are some areas that all people visit at least a few times during the average month, those areas being gas stations, restaurants, and nightclubs or bars.  Small businesses can have a lot of success advertising in these places, as their advertisement receives excellent public exposure.  In addition, advertising in these kinds of places is quite affordable even for a small business owner.

The goal of all advertising is to provide exposure to the products or services offered by the business, because as all marketers know, what isn’t advertised, doesn’t sell.  Take advantage of small business advertising and find the path to success!

Fostering Small Business Growth

When a small business enters the market, it’s most vulnerable in its first year.  Small businesses often fail because of inadequate marketing, but fortunately, even a small business can succeed against large competitors because of the right marketing.  When marketing a small business that has a product or service similar to that of a larger business, it’s important to differentiate.  Marketing can serve to differentiate products or services from the competition and also to allow a small business to target a group of consumers within the target audience.  For example, there are several locations online and in retail stores to purchase books, but a book store marketed as a place to find teen novels, comics, and manga might appeal to the significant market of youth readers.  Effective small business marketing differentiates and creates a unique niche for that small business.

When it comes to marketing, it’s best to leave it to the professionals.  While small business owners can market their business, in the first year it’s important to partner with others to get your business out there.

The Right Location to Advertise

When it comes to advertising, perhaps just as important as recognizing the target audience for a product or service is recognizing where that target audience resides.  It’s important to know where to advertise in addition to who would be interested in an advertisement, which is why location is so important.  When recognizing the locations the target audience frequents, it’s simple to place compelling advertising in those locations.  For example, for a company selling home solar panels as a means to cut costs on energy expenses, advertising in low and middle income neighborhoods in areas of the country where there is lots of sunshine is much better than blanket advertising around the country.  In addition, advertisements in these locations can be much more targeted and creative; advertise in bathrooms, on gas pumps, or even the sidewalk.  Discover the locations the target consumer visits on a day to day basis.

Once you’ve recognized the target audience and the location where advertising is most effective, you will be on the path to success.  This is why census information on consumers can be so valuable!

gas pump advertisements

Getting gas is something we all have to do every now and then. It’s not something that we necessarily look forward to or want to do, but in order to keep us mobile we have visit the gas stations. People getting gas are sitting ducks to advertisers because in order to get gas, you have to stand there and pump it – and advertisers know that.

Those few minutes spent pumping are precious to advertisers. That’s why gas pump advertisements work so well. People have nothing else to do while standing there other than to read whatever advertisement is on the pump. Many times it’s small businesses close to the gas station that have the most success with this type of advertising.

It’s a Requirement

Everyone knows that the United States is going through an economic recession. That means people are scraping to cut their losses and pinching every penny they have. Recessions are never good news for small business owners and it makes sense that they would cut costs wherever they can.

Just remember that decreasing advertising is never the way to save a business. In fact, if you’re wondering when to advertise, think now! Good advertising is what makes the difference between businesses that fail and businesses that succeed. Advertising isn’t a luxury it’s a necessity.
